CCM Graduate's Message to an RPS
Spanish Carey Guides
Carey Guides in Spanish are here! All we need is a singular designee - for the entire complex - to receive the license. Once you tell us who the individual is, they will be responsible for disseminating the Spanish Carey Guides to all case managers that require them. Below is an outline of best practices in regards to this process. If you or the designee have any questions or concerns please feel free to let me know.

Action Items
Inform the designee of the process outlined below
Inform me of the designee’s name and email address
Inform all programs staff of the process outlined below

Purpose
In order to remain legally compliant with copyright laws, 10 Spanish Carey Guide licenses have been purchased by the department. That is for one license per complex. The license holder/designee needs to be able to provide the digital pdfs for the Spanish Carey Guides to the requesting Case Manager. This is for inmates who have limited English written comprehension so that their experience with the Carey Guide process can be more valuable.

Spanish Carey Guide Process - Designee
One complex designee (preferably a COIV but the choice is yours)
An email to be sent to all COIV’s explaining that the designee needs to be emailed to request PDFs of all Spanish Carey Guides
Staff then email the designee, as needed, to receive all Carey Guides in Spanish
The designee will access the Carey guide site (www.cgptools.com) and download all guides as digital pdfs
The designee will then attach the guides into an email to send to the requesting case manager.
Staff can keep the digital pdfs on file for their continued use as needed

Spanish Carey Guide Process - Case Manager
If an inmate is bilingual or Spanish speaking only and has begun the CCM process, you request all Carey Guides in Spanish
Email (Enter Designee Name and Email Here) and request the Spanish Guides
Keep all digital pdfs on file for continued use as needed
You can now schedule the inmate as an ACIS self-improvement activity with two options. Please see the example below. If you have any questions please let me know!

PRF: Bedrock Goal
The one thing above all else that you must do in order to become the vision of your success. Example: If Suzie the alcoholic returns to drinking, her other goals will collapse as well.
Resistant Inmates
Despite your best efforts and those of the RPS, some inmates will be resistant to the CCM process.  These are the inmates that need intervention the most, so do not immediately give up when an inmate is resistant in word and/or body language to participating in CCM activities.
The overarching principle is:  CCM is part of the release process and inmate participation is required.
Preparing for the Carey Guide session
Ensure you have informed the inmate of his/her participation expectations, including having done Carey Guide homework for the week.  If the inmate is not prepared turn them away and inform them to be ready next week.
Reinforcing Positive Behavior
Whenever possible, and as a primary rule, reinforce positive behavior by acknowledging their good work.  Be sure, however, to remind an inmate of their responsibilities to be prepared and engaged during Carey Guide sessions.
If an inmate flatly refuses to participate during the session– warn the inmate that his/her refusal to engage is undermining THEIR effort to prepare for success after prison.  If the inmate still refuses to engage, warn the inmate that disciplinary action is the consequence.
If an inmate refuses to attend a CCM session or refuses to participate after warnings to do so, then initiate disciplinary action.
